Battle of Gettysburg

Where:  Gettysburg Pennslyvania.  Most famous battle of the Civil War.  Happenend July 1-3 1883.

Famous People:

Robert E. Lee-  General of confederate Army

General Pickett-  Led Pickett's charge, famous battle of Gettysburg

Abraham Lincoln-  Made the famous Gettysburg Address

Who Won:  The Union

Interesting Facts:

This was the farthest North the Confederate troops ever got.  They were intially going to try to attack Philadelphia \.

Abraham Lincoln gave his famous speech on the exact grounds where the battle took place.



Battle at Vicksburg

Where:  Vicksburg Mississippi.  One of the biggest and most important battles on the almost forgotten Western front of the Civil War.  Sarted May 18, 1863 and went through July.

Important People:  

Ulysses S. Grant- Union Forces

John Pemberton- Confedrates

Jefferson Davis- President of the Confederacy and former Mississippi governer

Who Won:  The Union

Intresting Facts:

Battle was mainly over control of the Mississippi river, both wanted it for different reasons.  Northern troops ended up getting serverly crippling the South.

Ulysses S. Grant later became the 18th preseident of the United States of America.

Battle of Antietam

Where:  Sharpsburg Maryland.  December 16-18 1862

Important People:

George B. McClellan- Union

Robert E. Lee-  Confederate

Ambrose Burnside- Union

Who Won:  The North

Interesting Facts: 

1.  This was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, 23,000 soldiers died.

2.  This battle led Abraham Lincoln to write and declare the emancipation proclaimation


First Battle of Bull Run

Where:   Manassas Virginia.  Happened not to far from the Northern Capital of Washington D.C.  Battle began on July 21, 1861.

Important People:

PGT Beauregard- Leader in the Confederate Army

Robert E. Lee-  Top General of the Confederate Troops

Irvin McDowell-  In charge of the Northern Army


Who Won:  The battle was won by the Confederates


Interesting Facts:

1.  This was the first true battle of the Civil War.  It is considered the starting point of the war by many historians.
2.  Legend says that Northern supporters came from Washington to watch the battle because they thought it was going to be an easy victory.  They ended up losing the battle.
